Are you starting a project but aren’t sure which LABELS to use? Here’s a quick guide to help you choose the right sewing labels.
Some people hate labels on undergarments, shirts, and pants.
Your sewing labels are an important part of branding when it comes down to seamstresses.
Even if the label is just used to indicate the size of the garment, it can still be styled and personalized.
Sewing labels were often fashion statements in their own right in the 1940s and 50s.
Sewing labels offer unique branding opportunities, regardless of whether you use pre-made or hand-made labels.
These are just a few examples that will get you started.
Make your mark
It would be wonderful to find a friend’s or family member’s handmade item with their label sewn on the inside.
How about tracking down a vintage fashion item? You might find out you are the only owner of a highly sought-after limited edition brand.
Even if you don’t see it right now, sewing labels are well worth the effort.
Choose from a variety of sewing labels
You have many label options, but ultimately you will be focusing your attention on the tags that represent your brand. This includes its size, origin, and any other washing/handling instructions.
There are two options for how these labels will be created: outsourced or homemade.
Each one has its obvious and not-so-obvious benefits.
Sewing labels can be a great way to make your products stand out, provided you don’t rush and use any label that you find.
Labels offer a unique way to stand out from the crowd and make your mark on the world.
Let’s start with basic information about the two main sources of sewing labels for your clothes.
Premade labels can be ordered online and can be applied either by ironing or sewing.
Although the idea of sewn individual tags to hundreds of t-shirts might not sound appealing, once you have a system in place, you will be able to make them fly.
Ironing them is an alternative. However, it will still require you to follow a few steps to maintain consistency and high quality, but this process is much faster and less labor-intensive.
You can find premade labels in all major styles: flat tags, flat tags, and centerfold.
This makes it easier to manage large items such as quilts, coats, or area rugs.
Text-only sewing labels can be a cost-saving option. Graphic logo labels are great for iron-on labels too.
Because it reduces the footprint size, we prefer to order custom-care labels separately from my brand labels.
If you are determined to make everything at home, you might consider using the freezer method of printing your labels at home.
This is a simple trick that allows you to permanently bond ink and fabric with a home printer.
Pretreated Kona cotton fabric, frozen paper, and a standard inkjet print device are required.
Pre-wash your fabric first to avoid warping the label.
Bubble Jet Set can be used to pretreat the ink so that it doesn’t fade.
Next, iron your cotton into a piece of freezer paper.
These two bonds allow you to print whatever you want on your printer, without worrying about shrinking or bleeding.
Recycled printer ink should not be used and laser printers will not work with this method.
Alternatives for those with low budget
If you are looking for something more personal and more handmade and have the patience and time to put everything together by hand, there is another way to make sewing labels.
For a more hands-on label, you could replace the printer with a permanent Sharpie. You could then just sew it yourself.
This is not something we recommend for someone who has limited time and receives a lot of orders.
This is a great opportunity to sign and number your labels.
Alternatively, you could purchase care tags and flip them over. Write your personal information on the reverse side and then sew them together using a centerfold stitch.
High-Quality Woven Labels
Handmade products make up a large portion of premium products. However, not all handmade products can be considered premium.
If you want to take your sewing business to the next stage and expand into a larger market, this is something that you need to remember.
Premade woven labels and iron-on labels are a great way to order a consistent product. You don’t have to sacrifice personal sewing labels for your brand.
